A stellar line-up of speakers will join the Raine Medical Research Foundation’s 50th Anniversary Research Symposium at The University of Western Australia this Friday, April 20, 2007.
UWA Vice-Chancellor and Raine Research Chair Professor Alan Robson will use the occasion to announce the creation of a $450,000 medical research grant in partnership with the Department of Health.
The symposium gets underway at 1.30pm at The University Club of Western Australia.
It will be chaired by Dr Robyn Williams AM, from ABC Radio National’s Science Show, and speakers include:
? Professor Lyn Beazley on the topic of brain repair;
? Professor Peter Leedman on understanding hormone action;
? Professor John Newnham on the early origins of the Raine Study;
? Professor Lawrie Beilin on childhood origins of adult cardiovascular and metabolic disease; and
? Professor Fiona Wood on regeneration versus repair.
At 6pm, 2006 Australian of the Year Professor Ian Frazer, will deliver the Raine 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee Oration: Cancer prevention in the 21st century: nature, nurture or vaccines?
The Raine Medical Research Foundation was established in 1957 through the generosity of Mary Raine and is the largest bequest left to UWA for medical research. It is the leading provider of non-government funds for medical research in Western Australia - second only to the National Health and Medical Research Council.
