JCU academics tops in tourism
James Cook University's tourism academics have made the University the highest ranked institution in the world along with a US institution when it comes to tourism research.
An investigation by two researchers from the University of Calgary in Canada nominated the 57 leading scholars in tourism and JCU has four representatives on the list.
Based on the historical review conducted for the article published in the prestigious Tourism Management - one of the top three international journals in the tourism field - JCU ranked second behind Texas A & M and the University of Surrey both of which had five leading scholars.
However, since then Texas A & M has dropped to four and the University of Surrey to two while JCU's top four are still working at Australia's leading tropical research university.
Only eight Australian based academics and five Australian universities made the list - JCU with four and one each at University of Queensland, LaTrobe University, University of NSW and Victoria University.
Written by Weibang Zhao and J.R. Brent Ritchie from the University of Calgary, the study "presents the findings of a comprehensive investigation of academic leadership in tourism research, as measured by the quantity of articles published in eight journals in the field between 1985 and 2004".
"The Texas A & M University and James Cook University are the leading employers of leading scholars, each of which has now attracted four scholars," their study said.
JCU's top four are Professor Philip Pearce and Associate Professor Gianna Moscardo based in Townsville and Adjunct Professor Dr Glenn Ross and Professor Bruce Prideaux from the Cairns Campus.
Professor Pearce is the highest ranked Australian academic on the list while Dr Moscardo is the top female tourism scholar in the world.
Both Dr Ross and Dr Moscardo received their doctoral degrees from JCU making the university one of only seven institutions world-wide with multiple entries in the list of 40 universities that trained the 57 top scholars.
JCU Vice Chancellor, Professor Sandra Harding, said the assessment of the Canadian academics served to reinforce her view that the University was a world leader in many areas.
Professor Harding, who took over as Vice Chancellor of JCU in January this year, said the listing of four of the University's tourism academics in the world rankings was an acknowledgement of the academic leadership and research provided by the University.
