Tyers

A $4000 award from Deakin University will help East Ivanhoe ophthalmic nurse, Julie Tyers, realise her dream of providing the gift of sight to hundreds of cataract sufferers in Ethopia.
Ms Tyers was the winner of one of three Deakin University Leadership in Nursing Awards.
The awards, offered for the first time this year, recognise the contribution of nurses to their profession and the wider community. Fellow award winners were Dianne Crelin, a nurse practitioner with the Royal Children’s Hospital and Hilary Stedman, nurse manager of a cardiothoracic surgical ward at The Alfred Hospital.
Ms Tyers’ award money will be put towards establishing the ‘Eyes for Africa’ project that will provide no-cost surgery to cataract sufferers in the remote regions of Buta Jira and Omo Valley. This project follows on from the successful completion of a similar initiative undertaken in Tanzania last year, where Ms Tyers helped to restore sight to 70 people.
