Australian promises better education for students

Australian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard has promised to guarantee that the international students coming to Australia will get a good education.

Speaking to Xinhua at the University of Technology Sydney on Thursday while announcing a 71.5 million Aus dollars of federal government grants for universities to improve their facilities, Gillard said the Australian government was very much concerned about the safety of international students in Australia.

"Earlier this year, there is a concern rising from a number of incidents involving safety with international students, some of them in Melbourne and some in Sydney. Immediately the Australian government made some statements stressing the concerns about the safety of students," said Gillard, who is also Minister for Education, Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations and Minister for Social Inclusion.

She said to make the international students study and live safely, the federal and state governments have guaranteed more policing in the streets.

Other measures include working with the international students and with the education system "to guarantee that the students coming to this country will get a good education," she added.

To achieve this goal, the Australian government was engaged in the process of the re-registering of all providers of international education to make sure there is quality.

"We are also engage now in working through our council of Australian governments on an international students strategy about welfare issues associated with international students, and engaged now in better provision of information to the students before they come to Australia, including better regulation of education agents from whom people get information."

Talking about studying here and applying for permanent migration, she warned that not every international student can successfully apply for permanent residence after studying in Australia.

"I'm very much aware that some international students come to Australia hoping to obtain permanent residency after completing their studies. We must ensure students understand that coming to study in Australia is about being a student in Australia and not about applying for skilled migration."

She said people who apply for permanent migration for this country will be dealt through in immigration system. The number of migration and the categories of permanent migrants varies from time to time, depending on Australia's national interest considerations, including the skill shortage that we might need in terms of additional skills.
