Strathclyde delivers guides for Chinese parents

The Mini Prospectus, Quick Guide to Courses, Parents' Guide and Faculty of Engineering booklets have been developed to help the parents of Chinese students thinking of studying in the UK. They include information on courses, accommodation and living in Glasgow, and information on Scotland's higher education system.

Senior academics and the University's International Office officially launched the new guides during a visit to Sichuan University last week.

Colin Rogers, International Officer at the University of Strathclyde, said: "I am delighted to be back in China, and it's a pleasure to have the opportunity to meet parents and students.

"We are proud to welcome students from more than 100 countries to the University of Strathclyde, and our high numbers of international students reflects our commitment to excellence in education and research.

"The new guides will give parents detailed information on what we do as a University and how we support our students from arrival to graduation."

The University's wider visit to China will include attendance at education exhibitions in Chongqing, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Ningbo and Hangzhou.

Professor Jonathan Corney, Head of the University's Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management, was also in China to attend the British Council's visit to Wuhan, and give a guest lecture examining how digital technologies are allowing product designers to adopt the same design methods used by software engineers.

The University of Strathclyde is based in the heart of Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, and is home to a vibrant community of over 15,000 students. It is committed to the highest levels of education and research, and has close links with business and industry in the UK and overseas.

It has strong links with universities in China, including Harbin Engineering University, North China Electric Power University, Shanghai Electric Power University, South China University of Technology, Donghua University and Beijing University of Chemical Technology.

In addition to shared degree programmes, the University of Strathclyde also collaborates on research and knowledge exchange programmes with partner institutions in China.

Strathclyde's strength in China was showcased recently though successful applications for funding from the Scotland-China Higher Education Research Partnerships for PhD Studies programme, run jointly by the British Council in Scotland and the China Scholarship Council in China. The initiative funds mobility grants for research partners to visit one another and for the exchange of PhD students. Engagement in the programme is already proving to be a success in further strengthening the University of Strathclyde’s links with China.
