"The profession of magician ... is as difficult as music, as deep as poetry, [and] as ingenious as stage-craft..." William Bolitho. Twelve Against the Gods, "Cagliostro and Seraphina," 1930.

Long before magic was my "profession," I loved it. Magic was one of my favorite childhood hobbies because I found it technically fascinating, intellectually stimulating, and psychologically revealing (of myself and of the audience). Now, when I perform magic shows for children, my deep-rooted enthusiasm uplifts my audiences. I began billing myself as "Mr. Magic" four years ago, when I started appearing at kids' birthday parties and community events. As I developed and refined the elements of a successful magic business by performing over 70 shows, I learned about advertising strategies, professional relationships, business courtesy, and financial responsibility. But there is more to "Mr. Magic" than just business. I also find great personal satisfaction in being a role model. Because I am still a "kid" myself, not an intimidating adult authority figure, kids can easily imagine putting themselves in my place.

I have many fond memories of satisfying shows. I once performed for a group of fifth graders visiting Madison from Newark. Many of these children had never seen any sort of live performance, never mind a magic show. They were one of the most appreciative audiences I have ever had — they gasped when the magic happened, laughed when I made jokes, and cheered when their friends helped in a trick. I loved that show and those kids, even though I knew I would never see them again. One of them, a wide-eyed, soft-spoken boy, asked me if he could keep the red sponge rabbit that had magically appeared in his hand during the show. He was inspired by my show, and wanted to take something tangible from it.

I now wish I had given him the rabbit. But I believe he received something even more valuable — inspiration. I like to think he is now sitting in his room practicing magic tricks with a bedpost for an audience, as I did when I was his age. Or perhaps his inspiration took some other direction — music, or sports, or writing, or whatever. But regardless, I am deeply moved to know that I might be his source of inspiration. Children living in such an oppressive environment as inner-city Newark urgently need role models. So do the rest of us. Therefore. I strive to be a role model as well as an entertainer in all my performances.

In my magic career. I have experienced an exciting taste of entrepreneurship. At the same lime. I am thrilled to see by the expressions on children's faces that I may have sparked their inner drive and passion. That double satisfaction is why I love the "business" of being Mr. Magic.
